Norwich you are not ready, N-DUBZ are taking over!
From 2006 – 2011, N-Dubz dominated both the UK charts and media; after a break, they are back and better then ever. Based in Camden Town area of London the trio consist of cousins Tulisa and Dappy, with best friend Fazer. The four-time MOBO award winners had a SOLD-OUT tour in 2022, and the group responded to the unprecedented public demand by confirming a summer tour for 2023. On Thursday 17th August 2023 the cultural phenomenon band are coming to take-over Earlham Park.
Ahead of their outside summer tour, I had a chance to speak to the group about their new single ‘February’, the upcoming tour and how it feels to be back…
Interviewing N-Dubz was a ‘pinch me’ moment as I had been a big fan since I was young. The whole band spoke to me which was a privilege due to what I imagine is a very busy schedule they must have. While Tulisa greeted me with a “Hey Jessica, how are you?”, Dappy shouted down the phone “YO, YO, YO” which was quite amusing. The group has an amazing sense of humour and their passion & love for their music really came across.
Firstly, how have you all been?
Tulisa: We're good, we're a little sleepy, it’s all very hectic but all positive things and very happy and excited. Everything's going really good with the new singles. So just enjoying it.
Amazing, that’s what I was going to say, your new single February was released yesterday, how has the support been from the fans?
Tulisa: Oh, it's been amazing. absolutely epic. But at the same time, I feel like we've given them what they want. You know.
Absolutely! February was played on Kisstory for the first time yesterday, how was that?
Fazer: Yeah, that was amazing, that was really cool. Obviously, we've got a new single out right now, very toxic, very back and forth, it's very empowering as well, for both sides male and female. But with that being said, we launched it yesterday, it's been a great response. Everyone's been so supportive about it and let's keep the love coming in and we've got plenty more for you on the album, which you guys are going to love and yeah, keep rocking with us.
Can you tell us anything about your next album, any indications?
Tulisa: Yeah, the album is coming up, this summer. I can’t tell you when, but it is this summer.
So, you have such a huge fan base in Norwich. How does it feel performing here? And have you been here before?
Tulisa: Amazing, our last show before we broke up, well not broke up, but had our phase, was at UEA in Norwich. So, it’s amazing to be coming back and Fazer used to go boating here…
Fazer: The Norfolk Broads! It amazing down there, me and my dad used to go sailing. It’s really nice, you’ve got a nice little town there.
We have, are you going to visit the broads while you’re up here in August?
Fazer: Yeah why not, we will get a little dingey out, let’s all go.
You had a sold-out tour last year; how does it feel having to add more dates for 2023?
Fazer: It's incredible. When we announced the tour and everything like that and it sold out the way it did, we had a discussion with our booking agent about doing a possible stadium shows instead of doing the London shows. We said we would hold back on the stadium shows and then add more days, so this why we put on the Summer Tour. We were just over the moon with the response of the tour and it's still carrying on now hence why we're sending out another tour for you guys across the country this summer. We're taking it outside and we're going to be in the parks, it's going to be like a little mini N-Dubz festival. ** That is so exciting for you guys. You have some amazing support acts for your summer tour. Have you played with them before? Are you looking forward to it?
Fazer: Yeah, yeah, yeah! We've got some great, amazing acts. I think that it's going to be great for them to be on a major stage like that as well. It's going to do great things and I think all around everyone's winning.
So, you guys have your classic old school N-Dubz fan that have there since the start. But do you have anything to say to your newer younger fans now that you've come in back?
Fazer: Ey listen to the younger fans that are clocking on to N-Dubz right now, follow the journey, make sure you stick with us (Tulisa: you are about to find out, just wait and see) just watch our journey, stay tuned in make sure you're following on socials and you'll see that we've got something for you coming in the summer, we've got an amazing album for you guys. So, make sure you guys go and check it out. If you are going through hard times or you are going through some toxic situations in your relationships or anything, this will be for you.
Wow that is so exciting. So obviously with your younger fan’s you guys have blown up on TikTok, what is your favourite TikTok trend at the minute?
Fazer: Oh, that's a hard one.
Tulisa: I should know this, I am always on it.
Fazer: I am a male, I do it for trends of Latino music. You always get some nice girls dancing. Once I hear thatbeats out some Latino musicwe’re in that sound, let’s go. ** (The whole band and myself were laughing at this point).
Do you have any preshow rituals you do?
Fazer: I like to listen to music really loud in my dressing room. Dabs likes to be in the darkness and in silence with white noise on, in his comfort and T, I don't know what she does because we don't see her until she’s on stage.
Tulisa: I like to exercise…
Fazer: No, before the show, that’s like 2 hours before… ** Tulisa: Oh, I am in my dressing room listening to The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up and punching the punch bag. I prepare for a show like how a boxer prepares for a fight.
Just finally do you have anything to say to your Norwich fans?
Fazer: Norwich we are outside this SUMMER! If you've missed the last tour, you're not gonna want to miss this one. Trust me.
Dappy: There's no concert like an N-Dubz concert.
