Daddy Issues
A drag show at Voodoo’s never fails to impress me, the show brings some incredible people together and it is just an evening of fun, laughter and watching some incredible talent.
Tonight, was a Father’s Day Special (this is your reminder that it’s Father’s Day on Sunday too!). “Daddy Issues” was hosted by Dandy Darling and Sam Moanella, two drag kings from Norwich. I have seen them both feature in other drag hosted nights, so I was excited to see them host tonight.
After the standard Voodoo’s pizza must before the show, I went upstairs to get seated. The room was filled, it was an amazing turn out for a Thursday night.
The show opened with the two hosts doing a choreographed dance, which was so incredible. Dandy was dressed as a bin man with the most insane light up/flashing top that they must have made. Sam Moanella’s outfit was inspired by trash, they had a bin lid had with rubbish attached to it. The pair bounced off each other and you knew after their first song that it was going to be a good night.
Dandy asked the audience if there were any single dads in the room, which with no surprise there wasn’t. But Sam Moanella asked if there was at sugar daddies, and the audience screamed. Everyone went crazy!
The second act of the night was by far my favourite! Terry D’acty came onto stage in full latex, and they brought the sass. I hadn’t seen this drag king before, but after a quick search online I saw that they are taking over East Anglia; they have recently had shows in Bury, Diss and obviously Norwich. Their version of “I’m not a virgin…” was incredible, I haven’t witnessed a drag show before where the drag king or queen was singing and not lip syncing, so this was a great surprise. Their voice was unbelievable. The crowd absolutely loved it, screaming, laughing and dancing. What was mentioned in the song isn’t appropriate for this review, but you definitely need to check Terry D’acty out for their next show.
The infamous Brat was on next. Brat was the first drag star I saw in Norwich and this where my love for drag started. I have seen Brat several times, so I was excited to see what they had installed for tonight. Brat came onto stage in shorts, socks and sandals, an “holiday” inspired shirt, with some geeky glasses on. What stood out the most of their outfit was the baby doll figure they had on a necklace; Brat blew what looked like smoke from the baby's head (later found out it was baby powder!) Brat lip synced to “Daddy AF” by Slayyyter which was so fitting for this performance!
The evening was split into 3 sections with a 15-minute interval which was nice. Each section of the night had a game which the audience could get involved with. My favourite was the fishing game where two members of the audience had to see who could catch the most fish (every dad loves to fish, right?). The two people that went up had a toy magnetic rod each and raced to catch the most fish, this got the audience riled up with excitement. It was so funny watching the two audience members racing (some cheating may have been involved). The song played during this game was “Beyond The Sea” from Finding Nemo, this added to the amusement.
During the second half of the night, Dandy Darling did the most incredible dance routine to “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba. The dance was energetic and captivating, Dandy once again got the crowd going.
Overall, it was such an incredible night. Other performances included Salazar Sparks, Lauren Order, Cammy Leone and Sir Hugh Mungus. The night felt so positive and uplifting, you left the venue with a smile on your face. Looking forward to seeing my next drag show!

There was very little messing about, charging through song after song, so that when the band departed after an hour, having knocked seven bells out of the drumkit, it felt like only half that time had passed.

I entered the LCR ready and willing to worship at the altar of their magnificence. Sadly, it didn't quite work out that way. At times this felt less about composition and more akin to ritual.
