L’Hexagone

L’Hexagone

We have been looking forward to trying this new restaurant since it arrived in Lower Goats Lane at the beginning of this year - but then Lockdown happened. So, it was great to get a table booked on a busy Saturday night in October.

L’hexagone is an independent French bistro owned by Gemma & Thomas. It serves simple French food and it’s currently open Monday to Thursday for breakfast and lunch with additional evening services on Friday and Saturday.

Our table was booked for 7:15pm and we were met by the lovely Gemma who walked us passed the open kitchen and to our table on the first floor. The restaurant had a busy but intimate vibe and the decor was very gothic with dark shades, low lighting and candles.

Toilets are situated on the first floor and were really clean as well as being nicely decorated in line with the rest of the restaurant. Covid-19 rules were being enforced, as you would expect within this new normal way of living.

To get the night started we decided on a lovely bottle of Caze Blanque Sauvignon Blanc IGP Pays d’Oc2019 at £23. This went down a treat and we may have had another bottle!

Now onto the food, as it is a French restaurant the menus are in French, but if you do struggle help is on hand by either using your smart phone or simply asking for help.  We went straight for main dishes, but the starters on offer that night included Moules Mariniere at £10 and Carpaccio de Bouef at £12. Did you get Google it yet?

Our choice of mains, were the Steak frites (we chose Filet) at £26 and Filet Mignon de Porc at £18. Both arrived without delay and were well presented. The filet steak was perfectly cooked to order and served with crispy fries. The Pork was tender and moreish, with some lovely crispy potatoes and a delicious rich mushroom sauce.

Of course, we had room for dessert, and shared a Crème Brulee at £6 and Mousse au Chocolat at £7. The Crème Brulee had that crack you’d expect when first diving in and was super creamy. The chocolate mousse was very light but rich in flavour.

Service throughout the night was prompt, really friendly and attentive. This added to the relaxed atmosphere and experience of the night. We definitely feel this restaurant is ideal for a date night, celebrating or catching up with friends.

This is our first review with Outline Magazine, and we did break the rules straight away by paying for the meal. We both decided within this current climate it’s the right thing to do, especially with an independent restaurant.
