The Vine - Running The Smallest Pub And Thai Restaurant In Norwich During A Pandemic Age
Setting up social distancing in the smallest pub in Norwich? Also trying to serve delicious takeaway Thai food at the same time? Located in our beloved Lanes, The Vine's reputation for a warm welcome, great drinks and beautiful food has been strong for years, but how did they cope with closing during lockdowns and what got them through? We spoke to Aey who owns and runs The Vine to find out more.
What was your expectation when the first lockdown was announced in March 2020?
We had never experienced anything like this and honestly I did not know what to expect, all I could think was when can I open my pub again or am I going to lose my business because of this disease? Basically I was pretty shocked.
As the smallest pub in Norwich did this have it’s own challenges?
Whether you are a small or big business I think we all have similar challenges. It is not about the size of the business to me.
How did you find operating during the tier system?
It was difficult in Tier 2 but when we were in Tier 3 it was even more difficult because 50% of my customers are drinkers so I had to provide a substantial meal (not a scotch egg) at an affordable price. Some of our drinkers had never had a Thai meal before, so we got them to try some and they were pleasantly surprised.
It must have been hard to open under the restrictions without losing money, considering all the other aspects you had to put in place?
It was not an easy situation with all the restrictions and no matter what the rules were (Track & Trace etc) there was always one or two customers who were making their opinion known and would complain. I had to point it out they were not my rules, the vast majority of my customers are really nice and understanding. I wanted to make sure we operated within the latest restrictions. It was hard to keep as it appeared every 5 minutes things were changing. I would wake up in the morning to find out the new rules. It seemed they were tweaked every day, but we followed it because we wanted the pub to keep open and make sure all PPE kits were available at all times. Alas this did cost us a fortune, but safety of customers and staff came first.

You have a well deserved excellent reputation for your Thai cuisine. Has this still been in high demand for take-away?
Initially I did not open for takeaway on first lockdown and second. I did introduce it again eventually, and I felt blessed in a lot of ways when I got up and running again. I received great feedback and massive support from both customers and suppliers. I would say this again and again - I do not know how to thank them enough.
In what ways has the pandemic affected your thinking on your business?
I see my pub as a place where customers are friends and we are a welcoming place for them. I do have some customers who have had to shield and might not want to come out again until they feel it is safe to do so. There is always the danger they will get used to drinking at home. This is more than a pub, it is not just a business and I care about my customers. I hope to see them all come back.
How have your staff coped and what have they been doing to help support and maintain the business during the lockdowns?
My staff are all furloughed and most of them in university so they are busy. Some of them were helping me with the new decor, new menu, social media and cleaning when we reopened both times. Mostly I have to say we were reassured by each other, and we were all checking on each other.
How have you kept peace and calm during this difficult time?
Seeing family and friends on Zoom and FaceTime have been important, and a few glasses of wine too! Also I am areligious person, and karma has helped me a lot.
How has it affected your personal values?
It makes me realise we have to live for today and a lot of things are outside of our control. There is no point to worry about them, so I just do what I can and be positive.
What, if any, positives have you found coming out of the pandemic?
A massive plus is I have had more time with my sons and learnt to give myself more time. Time is often a resource in short supply when running a pub/restaurant
What do you think you will change as a result of the pandemic experience?
Personally I would not change anything really, I would do my best as I have always done.
Looking forward what are your hopes and expectations?
I hope there are no more lockdowns and all the restrictions will ease soon. Onwards and upwards!

Will you be serving on the tables outside the pub on 12th April?
You know me, I’ll always try to keep my business running. With just three tables outside it is challenging ! I have asked a favour from my neighbour (10-80) to put tables & chairs in front of his shop and he has kindly let me. Now it is in process with licensing, so fingers crossed.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
I wish everybody all the very best for 2021 and look forward to having 2022 just like the old normal.

David Olusoga - A Gun Through Time
What was most surprising was how witty a speaker Olusoga is, quite a revelation given his austere TV persona. Given the grim journey he was about to take us on, perhaps its purpose was simply a chance to get to know each other before discussing the elephant in the room - or at least the gun on stage - the Maxim gun, known as the Devil's Paintbrush, spewing out 666 bullets a minute.
