In my humble opinion, the Sitar is one of the most enchanting and mystical instruments in the musical world. So much history flows through every chord with the capabilities to sonically transport you to another level of being. It was an honor to even be in the presence of the masterful composer, Jasdeep Singh.

His debut album blends the spontaneity and beauty of Indian tradition with the rich counterpoint of western classical music and modern rhythmic ambience. The astounding scenery of St Peter’s Mancroft felt like the perfect idyllic setting, with its’ grandeur matching the effortlessly captivating mealodies.

Jasdeep was accompanied by an 8-piece band including tabla players, violinists, and in Jasdeep’s words some “dirty bass lines”. Time seemed nonexistent as each heart racing track flowed into the next. Jasdeep shared some insightful wisdom on Indian classical music theory that made the work easy to connect with. The sweeping strings and jazzy bass added vibrant texture that created a sort of sweet meets savory tone.

The entire crowd was entranced by the impressive skill on display. Before you knew it, the set eased to a close met with eruptive applause and a standing ovation. Jasdeep is a talent with the potential to be truly timeless. The way he pairs contrasting spheres of music encapsulates passion and effortless diversity in a unique way.
