Goat Girl
Whilst we may have only had ten songs and a set that lasted forty-five minutes it was a set full of beautiful noise and powerful sounds
Goat Girl arrive at the Arts Centre as part of their mini ‘test drive’ tour. The testing element is playing a collection of new songs in front of a live audience, it’s essentially a show that’s not a show and we’re witnessing a band performing a live rehearsal.
Having said that I have to report that these new songs sound incredible. The opening track ‘where’s your <3’ is an angular, driven song that sounds like something The Breeders would be proud of. Equally impressive was the shoegaze element of ‘words fell out’ which filled the room with sonic joy and a full of blast of emotion.
Lottie Pendlebury’s lead vocals Ride Around were astonishing, a moving, swirling ball of delight that flickers and floats across the old hall. Bassist and vocalist Holly Mullineaux leant her warm tones to a number of songs too, the combination of them both really works well with the driven wall of sound.
We heard a couple of familiar songs ‘Sad Cowboy’ from the album All Fours has a wonderful electronica intro that spills into more shoegaze goodness, we had a number of dancers in the crowd who were very moved by this track as well as ‘P.T.S Tea’ which sounded a lot bigger, bolder than the recorded version.
New single ‘Ride Around’ was delivered with a full-on grunge guitar riff that sounded like it could have been written and driven by Hole. Drummer Rosy Jones is a wonderful percussionist and this song played to her strengths incredibly well.
Whilst we may have only had ten songs and a set that lasted forty-five minutes it was a set full of beautiful noise and powerful sounds. I’m excited to hear their new album ‘Below The Waste’ that’s out in June. If this taster of the record is anything to go by it’ll be one of the albums of the year.

There was very little messing about, charging through song after song, so that when the band departed after an hour, having knocked seven bells out of the drumkit, it felt like only half that time had passed.
