A warm welcome back to Hull’s finest bdrmm as they grace the Norwich Arts Centre once more with their shoegaze tsunami of noise and brilliance.
Having played the venue in October 2022 for the brilliant Norwich Psych Fest, bdrmm return on the back of their incredible sophomore album, I Don’t Know, which was released on the converted Rock Action Label, home and housed by Mogwai.
Speaking of Mogwai I got a strong sense of their influence flowing through the opening act, DEK
DEK has a seriously strong talent for merging a variety of genres, with a particular nostalgic nod towards shoegaze and alt-indie acts of the late 80s and 90s. Hailing from Manchester, the three-piece fused wonderful electronics with driven drum patterns and filled the room with stunning visuals to boot. An absolute joy to watch and nod our collective heads to.
DEK
bdrmm arrived on stage having spent the previous couple of nights supporting dream-pop gods DIIV and you could see the sheer energy and excitement from that pouring onto the stage.
Opening with Alps, the first track from the aforementioned I Don’t Know LP, the band took us on an epic journey through time and space via their supersonic sounds and this set the tone for the set.
Be Careful and It’s Just A Bit Of Blood swiftly followed, the alt driven, synth blur of their new record really comes alive when being performed on stage. Be Careful especially works with its lyrical reminder to look after our mental health, it’s a driven, dark yet beautifully optimistic piece of art.
We also get a number of tracks from the band’s debut album. Gush feels like an old friend coming to visit with its warm tones and stunning feedback. As does If…. which opens gently, easing you in and then explodes into a world of shoegaze delight that recent visitors to this fine City,Slowdive, would be honoured to have written.
Further highlights for me include the electronic dreamy new single Standard Tuning and the driven Is That What You Wanted To Hear?

Towards the end of the set we get two fan favourites (the scream of delight from one member of the audience was enough to confirm this) Push/Pull and Happy saw the Art Centre become a dance floor of delight.
Whilst there was little interaction from stage to floor there was a few moments of thanks and genuine heartfelt gratitude. You can absolutely feel that bdrmm love playing the NAC and we sure as hell love it when they do.
Haste ye back!

Franz Ferdinand
There was very little messing about, charging through song after song, so that when the band departed after an hour, having knocked seven bells out of the drumkit, it felt like only half that time had passed.

Whilst Dream Nails may be self-proclaimed musical witches, their love for their audience is clear to see.

Mogwai
I entered the LCR ready and willing to worship at the altar of their magnificence. Sadly, it didn't quite work out that way. At times this felt less about composition and more akin to ritual.
